Italian · history of sounds, writing and varieties
A history of Italian in speech and writing, following inherited sound patterns, contact, alphabets, manuscripts, print, codification and changing communities. Romance: the standard draws heavily on Tuscan literary traditions, alongside other languages and dialects descended independently from Latin. Geographical scope: Italy, Italian-speaking Europe and selected media and scholarly developments.
This researched selection contains 20 dated moments and 4 explanatory cards. Use aspect tags to compare pronunciation, writing and spelling, grammar and contact, standardization, evidence and social varieties. Connected moments identify related documents or developments; a line alone is not a claim of direct causation or an inevitable progression toward a national standard.
Reading sound history
/Slashes/ mark phonemic analysis; [brackets] mark phonetic realization; an asterisk marks reconstructed forms. Examples identify a historical stage or variety and should not be imposed on every speaker. Ancient and medieval pronunciation is reconstructed from spelling, metre, comparative evidence and contemporary descriptions. It is not an ancient sound recording. Modern recordings and corpora supply different evidence.
Sound changes spread through words, communities and generations. Approximate year anchors locate a broad process; they are not exact birthdays. Work composition, surviving manuscript copying, printing, fieldwork, legislation and later research publication have different dates. A language did not begin when its first surviving document was written.
Writing, institutions and variation
Standard spelling and prestige pronunciation have social histories. A policy or dictionary does not instantly make every person write or speak alike, and borrowed vocabulary does not alone change a language’s ancestry. Regional and overseas developments, multilingual contact and contested norms are identified where relevant. This survey does not claim to represent every community or every sound change.
All coordinates use Gregorian CE/BCE; coarse dates do not assert an exact first day. There are no duration bands ending at the creation date. Ongoing varieties and long linguistic eras are represented by dated evidence and qualified moments.
Each entry includes supporting sources, with emphasis on original documents, manuscript and book catalogues, scholarly research, language institutions and corpus archives. Institutional prescriptions are treated as evidence of a proposed norm, not proof that competing everyday varieties are defective.

Early Romance · vowel quality reorganizes inherited Latin contrasts
language: italian
aspect: pronunciation
Latin vowel length ceases to organize the system in its earlier form, while quality and stress shape new contrasts in the varieties ancestral to Tuscan. Later standard Italian retains distinctions between open and close mid vowels in stressed syllables. The reconstructed pathway is not identical across every region. The sixth-century anchor marks a broad stage rather than a recorded moment when a complete modern vowel inventory appears. **Example:** A common analysis of standard stressed vowels uses /i e ɛ a ɔ o u/. The open/close mid-vowel distinctions are not necessarily identical across all regional Italian. **Date and evidence:** 0600 CE. representative early-Romance vowel development. Gregorian CE/BCE. Year and month coordinates use the first day only for placement. A representative anchor for a gradual linguistic process is not its exact beginning; manuscript, composition, publication and policy dates are distinguished. **Sources:** - [Treccani: Italian phonology](https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/fonologia_%28Enciclopedia-dell%27Italiano%29/)
