#376 · Shorts 22 and 23: Marine Corps lessons, the dress-blues look, and exact pronunciation

  • pull request

The first two Marine Corps lessons shorts, on the timeline at timescale.info/athan/usmc, and the video pipeline changes they needed. **Shorts** - **Short 22, "Handed Down"** (52 s): the Corps' birthday and the cake ceremony; the lesson, keep faith with those who came before you and hand it on. Each battle in the run (Tripoli, Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima, Chosin Reservoir, Huế City, Fallujah) gets its own beat, framed to its own band. - **Short 23, "Nobody Left Behind"** (48 s): Chosin, 1950: Fox Company at Toktong Pass, Ray Davis's night march, the Hagaru-ri airstrip; the lesson, bring your people home. - `publicity/video/samples/usmc.ochx`: an export of /athan/usmc with the moments these shorts added (the birthday traditions, the Chosin campaign), distinct backgrounds for the Korean War and World War II bands, Schoonover's 1919 painting for Belleau Wood, and background addresses under 256 characters. **Pipeline (`publicity/video/common/`), all opt-in** - `core.js`: the `dressblues` look (dress-blue ground, scarlet blood stripes down each side of a short, Marine scarlet and gold). - `capture.mjs`: each frame waits for the duration and timeline background pictures to load, and their fade is off while capturing, so a shot never starts on the wrong picture. - `narrate.py`: a video can choose its Kokoro `voice`, respell words for the voice only (`say`), give exact pronunciations as IPA (`phonemes`, converted to misaki's `[word](/…/)`), and set a scene's pause between sentences (`pauses`); each clip logs the phonemes Kokoro read. Captions keep the script's spelling. - `prepare.py`: `segmentWords` fills in words whisper drops from very short sentences, timed from the measured speech of each sentence. Rendered MP4s are git-ignored, as before.
