Texas State Capitol - Austin, Texas - DSC07601.jpg; reusable Commons media, full attribution in timeline description.

A broad history of Texas, beginning with archaeological evidence and Indigenous societies, then tracing Spanish and Mexican colonization, the revolution and republic, U.S. annexation, slavery and emancipation, Plains conquest, agriculture, petroleum, civil rights, technology and modern infrastructure crises.

The modern state boundary is a reference frame, not a timeless political unit. Tejano communities, Indigenous nations, Mexican citizens, Anglo immigrants and enslaved people encounter very different meanings of independence and citizenship. The republic’s separation from Mexico preserves slavery; its survival after San Jacinto does not settle every sovereignty or border claim.

Annexation on 29 December 1845 is distinguished from the 19 February 1846 transfer of government. The secessionist declaration is quoted through its original document’s context, and Juneteenth is treated as an emancipation announcement and enforcement milestone rather than instantaneous universal freedom. Segregation affecting Mexican Americans is included alongside Black civil-rights struggles.

Cattle and cotton are connected to labor, credit and transport. Petroleum is connected to ports, regulation, global prices and fiscal exposure. Electronics, spaceflight, regional airports, music, universities and women’s political participation broaden the history beyond wars and governors. Harvey and the 2021 freeze show how environmental shocks interact with infrastructure choices.

Useful windows: 1500–1846 for colonial Texas and the republic; 1830–1905 for slavery, war, settlement and the oil transition; 1900–2025 for industry, rights and modern institutions. Deep prehistoric anchors make zooming essential for the modern story.

Reading tools

Use Separate by tags to compare these overlapping strands: Hispano and Tejano histories, Indigenous histories, Spanish and Mexican periods, agriculture, archaeology, borders and government, culture, culture and education, disasters, energy, environment, heritage and conservation, industry, labor, migration and settlement, public finance, religion, revolution and republic, rights and citizenship, settlement, slavery and emancipation, technology, transport, treaties and displacement, violence and memory, war and borders, women and political participation. Expand moments for evidence, image credits and explanatory cards. Undated cards explain concepts without inventing new dated events. Period bands are editorial guides and intentionally overlap. Directional connections have written explanations; other arcs are thematic reading paths, not automatic claims of causality.

Dates and evidence

Proleptic Gregorian BCE/CE calendar, UTC plotting coordinates. A year-only date uses January 1 as an anchor, not an asserted exact day; a month-only date uses its first day. There is no historical year zero. Early Irish Julian-calendar events generally use year-only anchors rather than silently reusing an Old Style day as Gregorian. Broad and approximate dates have presumptive outlines. A coarse year does not claim that an event happened at midnight on January 1. Research cutoff: 3 November 2026; the newest selected events are from 2024. This is a substantial survey, not an exhaustive county-by-county or person-by-person history.

Sources prioritize original treaties, statutes, constitutional documents, archival records and witness collections, supported by tribal histories, public archives, museums, universities, historical societies and institutional chronologies. Each dated event links the evidence used. Institutional summaries can contain shorthand or errors; dates are distinguished from modern commemorations, and contested claims retain qualifications. Witness collections require evaluation of perspective, provenance and corroboration. The selection does not imply every linked source or image is freely licensed.

Reusable images

The timeline cover, key-moment icons and period backgrounds use credited public-domain, CC0 or Creative Commons media permitting reuse. Modern photographs, later paintings, reproductions and memorials are explicitly identified rather than presented as contemporaneous depictions. Backgrounds are thematic illustrations. The app uses duration backgrounds for periods and moment icons for individual events. No changes beyond thumbnail scaling. Image rights remain those stated in each file record.

Moment details

Separate by tags

Events with any chosen tag move into a track above the rest of the timeline. Nothing is changed or saved.

Shift or scale times

Each time becomes (time − around) × scale + around + offset, exactly, as comparisons align timelines. A duration’s start or end that follows a moment moves with that moment.

Your draft becomes a pull request. The upstream timeline stays unchanged until someone with write access merges it.

        Timeline plugins

        Plugin suites

A suite adds several plugins at once. Plugins this timeline already has stay as they are.

        Create a suite

Package this timeline's plugins to add them to other timelines at once. The suite carries each plugin's definition, custom plugins included.

        Plugins

        Plugin editor

Define metadata fields and a restricted render script. No DOM, network, imports, loops or arbitrary calls. Later plugins override earlier effects. Installing takes effect immediately; publishing makes this version public in the server library.

        Plugin library

Popularity counts public timelines with the plugin enabled.

        Compare timelines

Select two to eight timelines visible to your account, or add a JSON file.

        Choose a shared time display

These timelines use different printers or parsers. Choose the display for this comparison. Original times stay unchanged; use scale and offset to align different coordinate conventions.

        Timeline time display

These settings belong to this timeline and are included in saved files and server copies. Times stay exact.

Numeric labels are rounded. SI prefixes work best with unit symbols such as s. A Julian year is exactly 365.25 days.

Displayed value = (stored time − origin) / scale. For Gregorian display, the displayed unit is one second from 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z.

Preview uses the current window span and viewport width. Custom helpers: hasView(), viewLeft(), viewRight(), viewSpan(), viewWidth(), unitsPerPixel(), labelResolution(), purpose(). Existing printers and parsers can ignore this context.

        New timeline from files

A moment for each file, dated as you choose. Its source is the file itself: open it from the moment in the file's own app. Nothing is copied, and file paths are never saved to a server.

The official server is https://timescale.info. You can connect to your own HTTPS servers too, and sign in to several at once: your timelines from each are listed together. Local .och files work without a connection.
