Timeline controls

New here? The tour shows the main controls one at a time.

A portion of the surviving Edwin Smith medical papyrus; credited public-domain media in the description.

A comparative history of the practice of medicine: how people describe illness, care for patients, test treatments, train practitioners and revise their obligations when evidence or experience exposes failure.

Scope and interpretation

The timeline spans archaeological evidence of care and surgery, ancient medical texts and traditions, translation and anatomy, hospital and nursing systems, microbes and prevention, modern therapeutics, clinical trials, medical ethics and selected genomic interventions. It includes the Hippocratic oath, the Declaration of Geneva, and repeated reassessment of research ethics. It is a broad survey rather than a catalogue of every healer, specialty or invention.

Medicine does not follow one inevitable path from Greece to modern Western hospitals. Egyptian, Greek, Roman, South Asian, Chinese, Islamic, Nahua and other contexts have different evidence and institutional histories. Translation and exchange are active intellectual work. Written traditions are more visible in surviving archives than many oral, domestic and community practices, so the earliest surviving text is not the beginning of care.

Key reassessments include anatomy versus inherited authority; Semmelweis and hand contamination; cholera and water; germ theory; nutritional deficiency; drug-formulation disasters; nonconsensual research; ulcer bacteria; surrogate outcomes in CAST; the Women’s Health Initiative; the CRASH trial; and stage-specific findings in RECOVERY. Science expands through successful treatments and through disciplined correction of plausible but harmful assumptions.

Compare traditions and topics

Every moment and completed duration has culture: … tags and a medicalCultures metadata list. These name medical traditions, scholarly settings, institutions or historical communities, not uniform ethnic categories. Multiple tags describe interactions where appropriate. Use Separate by tags to compare, for example, culture: ancient greek medicine, culture: south asian ayurveda, culture: arabic-language islamic medicine, culture: modern american medicine, or culture: international medical ethics. Topic tags allow another reading through surgery, diagnosis, infection prevention, clinical trials, nursing, research abuse, public health or reassessment.

Useful reading windows are 1700 BCE–300 CE for surviving ancient textual traditions; 800–1700 CE for translation, synthesis and anatomical criticism; 1700–1900 CE for comparative observation, anesthesia, hygiene and laboratories; 1900–2025 CE for therapeutics, systems, ethics, outcome trials and molecular medicine. The isolated archaeological moment near 29,000 BCE makes the whole-history view wide: zoom to one of these windows for readable detail. The separate 2022 publication moment explains the modern archaeological inference.

Relationship arcs connect documented stages or explicit comparisons. Each originating entry records a medicalHistoryConnections explanation and sources. An arc does not automatically assert direct descent or causation. In particular, comparative connections between traditions do not prove an otherwise undocumented transmission route.

Dates and completed durations

Proleptic Gregorian BCE/CE coordinates, UTC, with no displayed year zero. Year-only dates use January 1 solely as a plotting anchor. Approximate ancient dates represent broad composition or archaeological estimates, not exact event days. Before Gregorian adoption, year-only anchors avoid silently relabelling unconverted Julian dates. Dating a surviving manuscript is different from dating the work’s original composition.

The Hippocratic oath’s exact author and date are uncertain. Ayurvedic and Chinese collections have layered histories; their approximate anchors are not asserted exact founding dates. Discovery, publication, testing, regulatory authorization, manufacturing and widespread delivery are separate stages. Modern professional declarations are distinguished from ancient texts and from law or enforcement.

No duration ends at today or the timeline creation date. Three bands cover documented completed phases: the abusive untreated-syphilis study at Tuskegee, the intensified smallpox eradication campaign through certification, and the Human Genome Project through its announced completion. Their year-only endpoints are coarse phase boundaries, not exact days. Ongoing disciplines, institutions, traditions and therapeutic platforms are represented by specific moments.

Sources prioritize original studies, reports, manuscripts, regulatory records and institutional collections, complemented by specialist historical accounts. The chronology includes selected milestones through 2024. Later prize dates are labelled as recognition rather than substituted for discovery dates. Explanatory cards distinguish historical claims from current evidential conclusions and avoid turning population-specific trial results into universal statements.

Reusable media

The cover and timeline backdrop show a portion of the Edwin Smith papyrus, one surviving Egyptian injury text rather than a universal symbol of all medicine. Images are individually public-domain or Creative Commons works with attribution below and beside pictured moments. The oath image is a twelfth-century Byzantine Christian manuscript, not the ancient original. The Harvey illustration comes from a 1737 edition; the Lister image is an 1882 illustration; Fleming’s photograph is from the Second World War, not 1928. Their image dates are explicitly distinguished from event dates. No changes beyond thumbnail scaling.

Moment details

Separate by tags

Events with any chosen tag move into a track above the rest of the timeline. Nothing is changed or saved.

Shift or scale times

Each time becomes (time − around) × scale + around + offset, exactly, as comparisons align timelines. A duration’s start or end that follows a moment moves with that moment.

        Timeline plugins

        Plugin suites

A suite adds several plugins at once. Plugins this timeline already has stay as they are.

        Create a suite

Package this timeline's plugins to add them to other timelines at once. The suite carries each plugin's definition, custom plugins included.

        Plugins

        Plugin editor

Define metadata fields and a restricted render script. No DOM, network, imports, loops or arbitrary calls. Later plugins override earlier effects. Installing takes effect immediately; publishing makes this version public in the server library.

        Plugin library

Popularity counts public timelines with the plugin enabled.

        Compare timelines

Select two to eight timelines visible to your account, or add a JSON file.

        Choose a shared time display

These timelines use different printers or parsers. Choose the display for this comparison. Original times stay unchanged; use scale and offset to align different coordinate conventions.

        Timeline time display

These settings belong to this timeline and are included in saved files and server copies. Times stay exact.

Numeric labels are rounded. SI prefixes work best with unit symbols such as s. A Julian year is exactly 365.25 days.

Displayed value = (stored time − origin) / scale. For Gregorian display, the displayed unit is one second from 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z.

Preview uses the current window span and viewport width. Custom helpers: hasView(), viewLeft(), viewRight(), viewSpan(), viewWidth(), unitsPerPixel(), labelResolution(), purpose(). Existing printers and parsers can ignore this context.

        New timeline from files

A moment for each file, dated as you choose. Its source is the file itself: open it from the moment in the file's own app. Nothing is copied, and file paths are never saved to a server.
