Entrance to Newgrange Tomb, Co Meath - geograph.org.uk - 6518331.jpg; reusable Commons media, full attribution in timeline description.

A history of the whole island of Ireland, from prehistoric communities, farming and monuments through Christian learning, Viking towns, medieval lordships, colonization, famine, cultural revival and revolution to the two jurisdictions and their connected modern histories.

After partition, Republic of Ireland and partition and Northern Ireland tags distinguish jurisdiction-specific events. Shared events may carry both. Republic of Ireland is used for navigational clarity: the state’s constitutional name remains Ireland, while the 1948 act, effective in 1949, declares the description Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland remains a distinct jurisdiction within the United Kingdom under the settlement’s consent framework.

The timeline distinguishes the 1920 partition legislation, 1921 Northern institutions, 1922 Free State and opt-out, 1937 Constitution, and 1949 republic declaration. These are different constitutional milestones. It also distinguishes neutrality in the southern state from Northern Ireland’s participation in the United Kingdom’s war, and Republic-only euro adoption from all-island developments.

Political history is accompanied by manuscripts, language, sport, theatre, labor, industrial Belfast, population loss, migration, landholding and financial crisis. Medieval Clontarf is not labeled an expulsion of every Viking. Archaeological dates and Patrick’s missionary period are approximate. Famine mortality is not treated as the same quantity as the census population decline.

Useful windows: 450–1607 for manuscripts and medieval power; 1600–1855 for plantation, wars, union and famine; 1870–1949 for land, revival and state-building; 1965–2025 for civil rights, the Troubles, peace, Europe and social change. The full overview includes BCE prehistory and will compress modern events until zoomed.

Reading tools

Use Separate by tags to compare these overlapping strands: European integration, Republic of Ireland, Viking and medieval Ireland, agriculture, archaeology, architecture, colonization and land, culture, disasters, economy and technology, famine and land, foreign relations, labor, language and identity, law and government, manuscripts and language, migration and diaspora, partition and Northern Ireland, peace process, population and diaspora, prehistory, public finance, religion, revolution and independence, rights and citizenship, settlement, technology, the Troubles, trade, union and home rule, violence and memory, war and conflict, women and political participation. Expand moments for evidence, image credits and explanatory cards. Undated cards explain concepts without inventing new dated events. Period bands are editorial guides and intentionally overlap. Directional connections have written explanations; other arcs are thematic reading paths, not automatic claims of causality.

Dates and evidence

Proleptic Gregorian BCE/CE calendar, UTC plotting coordinates. A year-only date uses January 1 as an anchor, not an asserted exact day; a month-only date uses its first day. There is no historical year zero. Early Irish Julian-calendar events generally use year-only anchors rather than silently reusing an Old Style day as Gregorian. Broad and approximate dates have presumptive outlines. A coarse year does not claim that an event happened at midnight on January 1. Research cutoff: 3 November 2026; the newest selected events are from 2024. This is a substantial survey, not an exhaustive county-by-county or person-by-person history.

Sources prioritize original treaties, statutes, constitutional documents, archival records and witness collections, supported by tribal histories, public archives, museums, universities, historical societies and institutional chronologies. Each dated event links the evidence used. Institutional summaries can contain shorthand or errors; dates are distinguished from modern commemorations, and contested claims retain qualifications. Witness collections require evaluation of perspective, provenance and corroboration. The selection does not imply every linked source or image is freely licensed.

Reusable images

The timeline cover, key-moment icons and period backgrounds use credited public-domain, CC0 or Creative Commons media permitting reuse. Modern photographs, later paintings, reproductions and memorials are explicitly identified rather than presented as contemporaneous depictions. Backgrounds are thematic illustrations. The app uses duration backgrounds for periods and moment icons for individual events. No changes beyond thumbnail scaling. Image rights remain those stated in each file record.

Moment details

Separate by tags

Events with any chosen tag move into a track above the rest of the timeline. Nothing is changed or saved.

Shift or scale times

Each time becomes (time − around) × scale + around + offset, exactly, as comparisons align timelines. A duration’s start or end that follows a moment moves with that moment.

        Timeline plugins

        Plugin suites

A suite adds several plugins at once. Plugins this timeline already has stay as they are.

        Create a suite

Package this timeline's plugins to add them to other timelines at once. The suite carries each plugin's definition, custom plugins included.

        Plugins

        Plugin editor

Define metadata fields and a restricted render script. No DOM, network, imports, loops or arbitrary calls. Later plugins override earlier effects. Installing takes effect immediately; publishing makes this version public in the server library.

        Plugin library

Popularity counts public timelines with the plugin enabled.

        Compare timelines

Select two to eight timelines visible to your account, or add a JSON file.

        Choose a shared time display

These timelines use different printers or parsers. Choose the display for this comparison. Original times stay unchanged; use scale and offset to align different coordinate conventions.

        Timeline time display

These settings belong to this timeline and are included in saved files and server copies. Times stay exact.

Numeric labels are rounded. SI prefixes work best with unit symbols such as s. A Julian year is exactly 365.25 days.

Displayed value = (stored time − origin) / scale. For Gregorian display, the displayed unit is one second from 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z.

Preview uses the current window span and viewport width. Custom helpers: hasView(), viewLeft(), viewRight(), viewSpan(), viewWidth(), unitsPerPixel(), labelResolution(), purpose(). Existing printers and parsers can ignore this context.

        New timeline from files

A moment for each file, dated as you choose. Its source is the file itself: open it from the moment in the file's own app. Nothing is copied, and file paths are never saved to a server.

The official server is https://timescale.info. You can connect to your own HTTPS servers too, and sign in to several at once: your timelines from each are listed together. Local .och files work without a connection.
