A history of how people study living things: observations, collections, dissections, experiments, instruments, quantitative models and molecular measurements. This is a timeline of biological inquiry, rather than a geological chronology of life itself.

The selection contains 118 dated moments and 24 explanatory cards, from an ancient Egyptian medical manuscript to twenty-first-century genome assemblies and protein-interaction prediction. Biology connects practical knowledge about food, healing and environments with research traditions that became institutional sciences. The modern discipline did not spring into existence with a single person, book or laboratory.

Scope and interpretation

Ancient Mediterranean writings appear alongside Egyptian medicine, South Asian botanical and medical compilation, Chinese agricultural knowledge and Islamic zoology and anatomy. Early modern European collecting and illustration developed through travel, trade and colonial relationships, drawing on knowledge and labor that were not always credited in surviving publications. This is a selective documentary history, not an exhaustive account of every community’s knowledge. A surviving text marks evidence available to historians; it does not establish when a community first understood an organism or practice.

Later sections follow cell theory, evolutionary reasoning, heredity, physiology, microbiology, immunology, ecology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genomics and computational biology. Plants, animals and microbes all matter. Medicine overlaps with biology but does not exhaust it: photosynthesis, energy metabolism, ecosystems and biodiversity pose questions different from diagnosing or treating disease.

Use field and method tags to separate related lines of investigation. Explanatory cards discuss controls, historical inference, sampling, model organisms and the limits of familiar discovery slogans. Connection lines group developments for comparison and navigation. They do not by themselves assert direct influence, exclusive priority or a causal chain; some connect complementary or contrasting approaches.

What changed, and what remained uncertain

An instrument changes what can be observed, but interpretation also requires assumptions and independent evidence. A cell seen through a microscope, a segregation ratio, a density band, a sequence read and a predicted molecular structure are different measurements. Discovering a pattern is not the same achievement as explaining its mechanism. Determining structure, sequence and biological function likewise answers different questions.

The entries distinguish original claims from later revisions. Cell theory survived changes to early accounts of cell formation. Mendelian inheritance does not imply every characteristic follows one simple ratio. Laboratory synthesis of an organic compound did not create life. A synthetic genome experiment used an existing recipient cell. A more complete reference sequence does not represent every member of a species. Protein prediction does not automatically establish physiological function.

Credit is often collective. The timeline identifies collaborators, overlapping investigations and distinctions between an observation, communication and publication where the sources support them. It also includes harmful eugenic programmes, nonconsensual tissue collection and evolving research governance. Scientific usefulness does not erase the circumstances in which knowledge or biological materials were obtained.

Dates, sources and images

All coordinates display Gregorian CE/BCE. Year and month anchors use a first-day coordinate only for plotting. Approximate dates and representative anchors are explicitly qualified; dashed presumptive styling signals uncertainty of placement, not that a text or organism is fictional. Ancient writings may have layered composition and later surviving copies. Publication years are not silently substituted for earlier observations or later applications.

There are no duration bands: ongoing fields and research programmes are represented by dated evidence and milestones, without assigning the timeline’s creation date as their end.

Every moment and explanatory card supplies sources. Original papers, historical works, scholarly histories, archives, museums and research institutions are preferred. Some archival or publisher pages restrict automated access; citations identify the relevant work rather than implying unrestricted full-text access. Images are public-domain historical illustrations or explicitly licensed modern photographs and diagrams. Captions distinguish contemporary evidence, later reproductions and modern explanatory aids.

Moment details

Separate by tags

Events with any chosen tag move into a track above the rest of the timeline. Nothing is changed or saved.

Shift or scale times

Each time becomes (time − around) × scale + around + offset, exactly, as comparisons align timelines. A duration’s start or end that follows a moment moves with that moment.

Your draft becomes a pull request. The upstream timeline stays unchanged until someone with write access merges it.

        Timeline plugins

        Plugin suites

A suite adds several plugins at once. Plugins this timeline already has stay as they are.

        Create a suite

Package this timeline's plugins to add them to other timelines at once. The suite carries each plugin's definition, custom plugins included.

        Plugins

        Plugin editor

Define metadata fields and a restricted render script. No DOM, network, imports, loops or arbitrary calls. Later plugins override earlier effects. Installing takes effect immediately; publishing makes this version public in the server library.

        Plugin library

Popularity counts public timelines with the plugin enabled.

        Compare timelines

Select two to eight timelines visible to your account, or add a JSON file.

        Choose a shared time display

These timelines use different printers or parsers. Choose the display for this comparison. Original times stay unchanged; use scale and offset to align different coordinate conventions.

        Timeline time display

These settings belong to this timeline and are included in saved files and server copies. Times stay exact.

Numeric labels are rounded. SI prefixes work best with unit symbols such as s. A Julian year is exactly 365.25 days.

Displayed value = (stored time − origin) / scale. For Gregorian display, the displayed unit is one second from 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z.

Preview uses the current window span and viewport width. Custom helpers: hasView(), viewLeft(), viewRight(), viewSpan(), viewWidth(), unitsPerPixel(), labelResolution(), purpose(). Existing printers and parsers can ignore this context.

        New timeline from files

A moment for each file, dated as you choose. Its source is the file itself: open it from the moment in the file's own app. Nothing is copied, and file paths are never saved to a server.

The official server is https://timescale.info. You can connect to your own HTTPS servers too, and sign in to several at once: your timelines from each are listed together. Local .och files work without a connection.
