Crater Lake panorama.jpg; reusable Commons media, full credit in timeline description.

A researched history of Oregon, from ancient habitation, Fort Rock technology and the creation of Crater Lake through Pacific trade, Oregon Country, settlement, dispossession, statehood, industrial growth and modern struggles over rights and the environment.

The account treats Native peoples as continuing nations and communities. Treaties, Grand Ronde removal, boarding schools, federal termination and restoration appear as distinct events. Celilo Falls and the Klamath River demonstrate that water infrastructure also changes fisheries, cultural places and political relationships.

The modern state is a geographical frame rather than a timeless border. Fort Vancouver and Waiilatpu lie in present Washington but belong to the connected history of Oregon Country. A European voyage, imperial claim, provisional government, U.S. territory and statehood are different kinds of milestones.

The history includes anti-Black exclusion and its repeal, Chinese workers and the Hells Canyon massacre, Japanese American incarceration, Vanport, women’s suffrage and LGBTQ rights. Timber, agriculture, ports, railways, Tektronix, running-related enterprise, public beaches, land-use planning and environmental policy broaden the account beyond exploration and governors.

Useful windows: 1700–1860 for encounters, migration and state-making; 1850–1949 for dispossession, institutions, labor and industrial development; 1940–2025 for technology, housing, rights and resource politics. The full overview includes BCE prehistory and compresses modern events until zoomed.

Explore the strands

Use Separate by tags for agriculture, archaeology, borders and government, colonial encounters, culture and education, culture and sport, disasters, environment, exploration, health, heritage and conservation, indigenous histories, industry, labor, migration, public finance, religion, rights and citizenship, settlement, technology, tourism, trade, transport, treaties and displacement, violence and memory, war and conflict, war and defense, water, women and political participation. Events can have multiple tags because these histories interact. Expand moments for their evidence, explanatory cards and image qualifications. Explained directional connections are distinct from other thematic arcs, which do not by themselves assert causation.

Dates, sources and duration boundaries

Proleptic Gregorian BCE/CE calendar, UTC plotting coordinates. A year-only date uses January 1 as an anchor, not an asserted exact day; a month-only date uses its first day. There is no historical year zero. Events in English colonies before the 1752 calendar change generally use year-only anchors, avoiding silent reuse of Julian Old Style days as Gregorian. Archaeological ages are approximate and are not exact arrival dates. Approximate archaeological dates and broad anchors are marked with presumptive outlines. There is no claim that year-only events occur at midnight on January 1. Research checked through 3 November 2026; the latest selected event varies by timeline.

Continuing institutions, communities and developments are represented by start moments with no invented end. Durations are confined to completed conflicts, occupations, government phases, school operation or closure, and other periods with evidenced historical endpoints. A short-lived institution can close while its influence continues. A disaster can end while recovery remains unfinished. The research cutoff is never used as a duration endpoint.

Evidence prioritizes original laws, treaties, constitutional records, petitions, archival documents, court opinions and institutional records, alongside tribal histories, museums, universities, public archives and specialist historical research. Each dated event links its evidence. Summary chronologies are checked against more specific records where dates or stages conflict. Colonial accounts, trial testimony and older museum descriptions require source criticism. This is a broad survey rather than an exhaustive list of every community, county, person or event.

Images and backgrounds

Covers, key-moment images and selected completed-period backgrounds use individually credited public-domain, CC0 or Creative Commons media permitting reuse. Later paintings, reconstructions, museum displays and modern landscapes are identified as such. A file’s capture date is distinct from the historical event it illustrates. A preservation image does not imply the pictured building existed at the event’s date. No changes beyond thumbnail scaling; reuse rights do not automatically extend to every linked publication.

Moment details

Separate by tags

Events with any chosen tag move into a track above the rest of the timeline. Nothing is changed or saved.

Shift or scale times

Each time becomes (time − around) × scale + around + offset, exactly, as comparisons align timelines. A duration’s start or end that follows a moment moves with that moment.

        Timeline plugins

        Plugin suites

A suite adds several plugins at once. Plugins this timeline already has stay as they are.

        Create a suite

Package this timeline's plugins to add them to other timelines at once. The suite carries each plugin's definition, custom plugins included.

        Plugins

        Plugin editor

Define metadata fields and a restricted render script. No DOM, network, imports, loops or arbitrary calls. Later plugins override earlier effects. Installing takes effect immediately; publishing makes this version public in the server library.

        Plugin library

Popularity counts public timelines with the plugin enabled.

        Compare timelines

Select two to eight timelines visible to your account, or add a JSON file.

        Choose a shared time display

These timelines use different printers or parsers. Choose the display for this comparison. Original times stay unchanged; use scale and offset to align different coordinate conventions.

        Timeline time display

These settings belong to this timeline and are included in saved files and server copies. Times stay exact.

Numeric labels are rounded. SI prefixes work best with unit symbols such as s. A Julian year is exactly 365.25 days.

Displayed value = (stored time − origin) / scale. For Gregorian display, the displayed unit is one second from 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z.

Preview uses the current window span and viewport width. Custom helpers: hasView(), viewLeft(), viewRight(), viewSpan(), viewWidth(), unitsPerPixel(), labelResolution(), purpose(). Existing printers and parsers can ignore this context.

        New timeline from files

A moment for each file, dated as you choose. Its source is the file itself: open it from the moment in the file's own app. Nothing is copied, and file paths are never saved to a server.
