Front of the early eighth-century Franks Casket, showing inscriptions and narrative carving. Runes coexist with Latin-language material on this object. Wilhelm Viëtor · Public domain. A history of English as spoken and written, from reconstructed Germanic ancestry to twenty-first-century descriptions of global varieties. The timeline follows sound changes alongside runes, Latin letters, manuscripts, spelling, print, dictionaries, phonetic notation and digital character standards. Its 91 dated moments and 24 explanatory cards provide complementary routes through linguistic and documentary history.

English descends from Germanic varieties. Extensive French, Latin and other borrowing does not change that genealogical classification. Nor does the emergence of English imply the replacement of all Britain’s earlier people or languages. Contact, migration, institutions, schooling, colonial power and everyday multilingual life all contribute to what speakers and writers do.

Sounds and writing

Explore palatalization, i-mutation, unstressed-vowel reduction, open-syllable lengthening, the Great Vowel Shift, consonant-cluster loss, the FOOT–STRUT split, changing /r/ and BATH vowels. Examples use phonetic symbols and explanatory cards. /Slashes/ generally indicate phonemic analysis, [brackets] phonetic realization and an asterisk a reconstructed form. Broad examples describe specified traditions, not every English accent. A lexical set such as BATH groups comparison words; it is not itself a universal phoneme.

Written evidence includes the Undley bracteate, Franks Casket, Ruthwell Cross, Bede, Cædmon witnesses, the Lindisfarne gloss, Beowulf, Ormulum and Chaucer, followed by Caxton, spelling reformers, Bible translations and Shakespeare’s First Folio. Later moments cover Johnson, Webster, the Oxford English Dictionary, dialect surveys, the IPA, corpora, ASCII and Unicode. Changes in spelling, letter shapes, vocabulary and pronunciation do not necessarily occur together.

Evidence and dates

Sound changes usually lack an exact birthday. Approximate anchors locate processes whose chronology and dialect spread require reconstruction. Manuscript copying, work composition, publication, fieldwork and later scholarly interpretation are distinguished. A modern description of Nigerian English is dated to its publication, not presented as the language’s creation. Original Old English voices were not recorded: spellings, metre, comparison and subsequent developments constrain scholarly reconstruction. Modern recording projects supply a different kind of evidence.

All dates display in Gregorian CE/BCE. Year and month anchors do not assert an exact first day. There are no duration bands: conventional linguistic periods and continuing varieties should not be assigned artificial endpoints at the date this timeline was created.

Varieties, society and navigation

Tags separate historical stages and pronunciation, writing, grammar/contact, spread/varieties and evidence/study. Scotland and Ireland, North America, Australia, New Zealand, India, the Caribbean, African American English, London and Nigeria appear through selected events and evidence. This is a substantial survey, not an exhaustive account of every English-speaking community. Scots has its own literary history; Jamaican Creole and Jamaican English should not be collapsed into one language. Prescriptive rules and prestige accents are social and historical phenomena rather than the endpoint toward which all English naturally progresses.

Relationship lines group related developments or comparative evidence. They do not by themselves assert direct causation, common identity or a single inevitable sequence. Explanatory cards discuss contact causation, dating, transcription, registers and the limits of written and corpus evidence.

Images and sources

The cover shows the early eighth-century Franks Casket. Public-domain and freely licensed illustrations show real inscriptions, manuscript pages, printing and the original 1888 phonetic table. Each has a source, credit and contextual caption; later witnesses and editions are identified. Sources emphasize manuscript collections, original publications, scholarly linguistics, historical dictionaries, corpus archives and standards bodies.

Moment details

Separate by tags

Events with any chosen tag move into a track above the rest of the timeline. Nothing is changed or saved.

Shift or scale times

Each time becomes (time − around) × scale + around + offset, exactly, as comparisons align timelines. A duration’s start or end that follows a moment moves with that moment.

        Timeline plugins

        Plugin suites

A suite adds several plugins at once. Plugins this timeline already has stay as they are.

        Create a suite

Package this timeline's plugins to add them to other timelines at once. The suite carries each plugin's definition, custom plugins included.

        Plugins

        Plugin editor

Define metadata fields and a restricted render script. No DOM, network, imports, loops or arbitrary calls. Later plugins override earlier effects. Installing takes effect immediately; publishing makes this version public in the server library.

        Plugin library

Popularity counts public timelines with the plugin enabled.

Select two to eight timelines visible to your account, or add a JSON file.

        Choose a shared time display

These timelines use different printers or parsers. Choose the display for this comparison. Original times stay unchanged; use scale and offset to align different coordinate conventions.

        Timeline time display

These settings belong to this timeline and are included in saved files and server copies. Times stay exact.

Numeric labels are rounded. SI prefixes work best with unit symbols such as s. A Julian year is exactly 365.25 days.

Displayed value = (stored time − origin) / scale. For Gregorian display, the displayed unit is one second from 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z.

Preview uses the current window span and viewport width. Custom helpers: hasView(), viewLeft(), viewRight(), viewSpan(), viewWidth(), unitsPerPixel(), labelResolution(), purpose(). Existing printers and parsers can ignore this context.

        New timeline from files

A moment for each file, dated as you choose. Its source is the file itself: open it from the moment in the file's own app. Nothing is copied, and file paths are never saved to a server.
